#19 Chico State led from tip to defeat Stanislaus State

CHICO — Running off to a 10-0 lead, the 19th rank Chico State Wildcats opened their home schedule with a 70-49, non-conference win over Stanislaus State Tuesday inside Acker Gym.

Isaiah Ellis had 18 points and 7 rebounds and Jalen McFerren chipped in 13 points as Chico State improved to 3-1 on the season. The Warriors are now 1-3 heading into the weekend's NDNU Thanksgiving Classic at Belmont.

Kyle Gouveia notched his fourth straight double-digit scoring game with 12 points while Vondel Faniel and Richard Medina each scored eight points. Medina also had five assists and three steals.

Stan State scoring leader Kaelen Mitchell, who averaged 17.3 points a game in the first three, was held to five points on 2 of 7 shooting. He and Keiland Callum each also pulled five rebounds, as did Gouveia.

Chico State started the game 10-0, then used an 11-0 run, capped by a Michael Bethea three-pointer, for a 33-11 lead with 6:46 left to play in the first half.

The Warriors had a much stronger second half and pulled within 10 points, after trailing by as many as 23, on Mitchell's only three-pointer of the night at 8:42 in the second. But the Warriors allowed Chico State to make a late run, mostly from the free throw line to run away.

Chico State scored four of the final five buckets in the game to close out with an 11-2 run.

Stanislaus will face Notre Dame de Namur Friday night at 7 p.m. in Belmont before taking on Holy Names at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
