Box Score BELMONT — Like their counterpart Stan State women's basketball team last week, the Warrior men could not hit from long range either as Stanislaus State dropped a 68-59 decision to host Notre Dame de Namur Friday night at the Gleason Gym.
The Warriors went 0-for-17 from the three-point arch on the night and could not recover from a slow, low-intensity first half to fall to 1-3 on the season. The Warriors lost the NDNU for the first time since 2007 while the Argonauts posted their first win in four tries this season.
Notre Dame de Namur also beat a California Collegiate Athletic Association team in 16 chances over a five-year span. NDNU's last win over a CCAA squad was in 2011.
Like the women's team, on home court last Friday, the Warriors missed their first 17 three-point attempts against the Argonauts.
Kyle Gouveia provided the bright spot with a season-high 20 points to go with seven rebounds to lead the Warriors. He was a sharp 8 of 14 from the floor, but the rest of the team shot 16 of 49.
Keiland Callum scored 12 and
Vondel Faniel chipped in nine points.
Aside from the early lead to begin the game, the Warriors trailed the rest of the way with NDNU leading by 14 points early in the second half. Stan State rallied back and got within three points after a
Jaelen Ragsdale layup with 9:30 to play.
But the Argonauts surged ahead again before the stellar night by Brian Ying. Ying nailed one of his three-pointer and NDNU eventually regained a 12-point margin inside the five-minute mark.
Ying finished with a season-best 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting. NDNU made six three-pointers and shot 49 percent for the night.
The Warriors will take on Holy Names in Belmont Saturday at 5 p.m.
