FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Newman's Bria DeGrate shot lights out as she led the Jets to a 71-57 win over Stanislaus State at the Mt. McKinley North Star Invitational on Saturday.
DeGrate led all players with 24 points — she made 8 of 13 shots with 6 for 7 from the three-point arch — as the Newman Jets went 3-0 to win the tournament. Newman, a Heartland Conference Division II program from Wichita, Kansas, improved to 6-2 on the season.
The Warriors were led by three players in double figures in scoring but fell to 2-5 overall. The Warriors went 1-2 in the tournament with a win over Metro State on Thursday.
On Saturday,
Cassidy Sanders-Curry led Stan State with 14 points,
Reana Hardin scored 12 and
Ana Burch, who had a career-high 25 points Friday night, chipped in 10 points.
Newman shot 50 percent for the game, including a 61.5 percent-shooting second quarter to build a slight 32-28 halftime lead. But the Jets outscored the Warriors by five points in each of the third and fourth quarters.
DeGrate entered the week averaging 16 points a game and scored 20 points on Thursday in the win over Alaska. She was held to three points against Metro State in the team's 57-53 win on Friday. Mali Wright added 17 points for Newman and the Jets out-rebounded Stanislaus, 33-19.
The Warriors were just 1 for 11 from the three-point arch for the game but did make 20 of 27 free throws.
Stanislaus State faces Sacramento State — the Warriors' third Division I opponent this preseason — on Tuesday in Sacramento. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. The Warriors will also have a CCAA game on Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
