SACRAMENTO – Sacramento State's Maranne Johnson and Emily Easom's sharp shooting turned out to be too much for Stanislaus State's defense, as they sent the Warriors home from The Nest with a 102-72 loss on Tuesday night.
Despite the exhibition contest defeat, the now 2-5 Warriors scored 72 points against the Division I opponent, the team's best since their loss against Nevada when they scored 77 points. With the win the Hornets advance to a 3-4 record for the season.
Riley Holladay kept the ball moving, ending the night with eight assists. She also picked up four rebounds, one of four Warriors to have an aggressive night at the hoop.
Lizzy Alexander led with seven rebounds,
Cassidy Sanders-Curry had six and
Erika Larsen also snatched four.
Sanders-Curry and
Ana Burch led the Warriors with 13 points apiece.
Angelica Baylon added 11 points, and
Reana Hardin scored 10.
Burch and Sanders-Curry were hot at the hoop, each banking six shots. Burch went 6-for-9, and Sanders-Curry shot 6-for-11 during the night. Overall, the Warriors shot 42.2 percent, their second best all season.
To begin the game Stan took a five-point lead on the Hornets and were able to end the first quarter ahead, 12-11. The Hornets gained a 10-point lead in the second quarter, keeping their advantage over the Warriors up through their 14-point run to end the game.
Sac State was led by Johnson who dominated the game with a whopping 37 points. Easom shared the domination with 25 points of her own. Four Hornets ended the game with five or more rebounds, and two Hornets had five or more assists.
The Warriors are on the road again on Friday for their first conference matchup of the year. Stan State will be traveling to Cal State Dominguez Hills to begin the CCAA season.
