Warriors defeated by former CCAA foe, CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD – Stanislaus State faced a 78-51 loss to CSU Bakersfield, as they struggled to keep up with their Division I opponent's quick offense and aggressive defense at the Icardo Center on Tuesday night.

The Roadrunners were able to achieve their second win of the season, continuing their winning record against Stan State after not facing them in a decade. CSU Bakersfield has advanced to 2-6 overall and the Warriors are now 3-6 overall. Bakersfield was in the CCAA until moving up the Division I in 2007.

Unlike the three previous games against Division I program where they were exhibition contests, Tuesday night's game counts in the win-loss records for the Warriors.

The Warriors started out strong with a 9-2 lead over the Roadrunners, but unfortunately were not able to hold their advantage over the home team, concluding the first period trailing 27-19. CSU Bakersfield continued widening the gap, leaving the Warriors behind 43-30 at halftime. The Warriors ended up trailing 57-36 for a 21-point deficit at the end of the third quarter as CSUB pushed ahead.

Despite the Warriors misfortune, Cassidy Sanders-Curry had a strong night at the hoop with 14 points, tying her season high which she set on Nov. 26 against Newman. Sanders-Curry, along with Riley Holladay and Lailoni Gaines, each grabbed five rebounds for Stan State.

Holladay was the Warriors offense facilitator with four assists and Sanders-Curry, Angelica Baylon, and Gaines each had three steals. The Warriors were without the services of a few key players Tuesday night as they attended to their academics. Ana Burch, Erika Larsen and Leticia Infante did not make the trip, to name a few of the role players.

Ending the game shooting 17-for-56 on the night, the Warriors shot just 30.4 percent. They were just 13.3 percent in the second quarter to allow CSUB to pull ahead.

The Roadrunners had three players in double digits in scoring. They were led by Addi Walters with 16 points, Jazmyne Bartee scored 15 and Brittany Sims with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Stan State will be heading back to Turlock to host their conference opener against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
