Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors run out of steam again in second half in loss to CSUSB

SAN BERNARDINO — The Warriors were on a hot streak that had them looking up en route to snapping this losing streak. Then, the usual dry spell happened and the opponents took off to a convincing win.

Friday night at Coussoulis Arena, Cal State San Bernardino turned away the Warriors in the second half for a 74-59 win, handing Stanislaus its 10th consecutive loss after starting the CCAA season 4-1.

Vondel Faniel scored 10 of his career-high 17 points during the Warriors' run in the middle of the game before they come up short to fall to 5-15 overall and 4-11 in the CCAA.

During a nine-plus minute stretch — three minutes at the end of the first half and six minutes at the start of the second half — the Warriors were on fire. Stan State went on a 17-3 run, going 7-for-16 while cashing in on the Coyotes' miserable time hitting just 1 of 15 shots. That run turned a 12-point deficit into a two-point lead, 39-37, with 14:12 to play following back-to-back layups by Faniel.

But that was the last time Stan State had the lead. San Bernardino made a run using a 21-8 advantage to take a 11-point lead to put the game out of reach in the end. The Coyotes would lead by as many as 18 points, 72-54, with 45 seconds left, the results of a 11-2 run.

A Joey Bennett layup at 2:38 was Stanislaus' only bucket since 5:36 — a Stephen Evans three-pointer. The Warriors would make only one more field goal the rest of the night — a Christian Bayne trey with 37 ticks left.

As for Faniel, he was 8-for-14 for his best out-put since the last time the Warriors played San Bernardino. Back on Dec. 3 in Turlock, Faniel scored his pervious best of 13 points against CSUSB. Faniel also had 12 rebounds for a double-double on Friday.

Kyle Gouveia earned his second double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Bayne finished with 12 points.

The Coyotes (8-12, 5-11 CCAA) made 14 three-pointers with Juan Martinez leading with four treys for 19 points.

Stanislaus State will have to face UC San Diego, which was in first place entering Friday until the Tritons lost to Chico State, 77-71. Chico State took over the top spot at 13-2 in CCAA play while UCSD is now 13-3.
