Softball drops two more at UC San Diego

LA JOLLA — It's a tough way to start the conference season under first-year head coach Jessica Ventoza, but the Warriors did manage to hit and score against one of the best teams in the West before being swept on Saturday.

Stanislaus State again held a lead in a game, this time the opener on Saturday, before losing 8-4. The Tritons flexed their muscles again in the series finale with a 11-2, five-inning win to complete the sweep.

UC San Diego is now 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association while Stan State fell to 3-6 and 0-4.

Cassidy Duke homered twice in game two to drive in four runs. Her first, a two-run shot in the second gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead. After UCSD rallied with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings for a 7-2 score, Duke blasted another 2-run homerun to center for a 2-for-3, 4-RBI, 2 homer day. She now has three homeruns this season.

UC San Diego had six doubles and capitalized on three Stanislaus errors to get out ahead.

In the nightcap, another crooked number inning doomed the Warriors. The Tritons scored nine times in the second inning to run away with the game. None of the runs scored in the second inning were earned runs as a result of two fielding errors to start the inning.

Kiley Ragsdale was tagged for both losses as she threw a total of 7 1/3 innings in the twinbill.

Alex Rowell went 2-for-2 with a RBI double in game two.

The Warriors open the home schedule on Friday when they host Cal State San Marcos with a doubleheader starting at Noon.
