Stan State women blow away Humboldt State, 93-65

TURLOCK — One of the better defenses in the CCAA playing against a team that gives up a lot of points resulted in the Warriors blowing away Humboldt State as Stanislaus State won 93-65 Friday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Stan State scored 45 points off 26 Humboldt State turnovers as the Warriors snapped a three-game skid to improve to 15-8 overall and 11-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The win, against a fifth place team, helped the Warriors inch closer to a home game in the first round of the CCAA Tournament.

The Warriors could clinch a home game in the first round of the CCAA Tournament on March 1 with a win Saturday night, coupled with a Cal State San Bernardino loss at Cal State San Marcos.

Cassidy Sanders-Curry had another double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Alysa Valentine scored 20 points to lead the Warriors.

Stan State nailed 12 of 21 three-pointers with Valentine hitting four and Sanders-Curry three as the Warriors improved to 9-1 at home.

A'Jaee Foster scored 14 to lead the Lumberjacks, now 12-13 overall and 9-9 in CCAA.

Entering the weekend, the Warriors are second in the CCAA with 9.8 steals per game and allow just 60.2 points per game for third best. On the other end, HSU allows the second most points at 65.2 per league game.

All of those stats held true Friday night with Stanislaus State scored way more than 65 points. That's because the outside shooting was on-point and those turnovers turned into extra possessions as the Warriors took 20 more shots than the Lumberjacks.

In the end, the Warriors were credited with 16 steals.

Stanislaus used a big 17-0 run between the end of the first quarter to the start of the second to turn a two-point HSU lead into a 29-16 lead with 8:05 to go in the half. The Warriors were 6-for-10 during that run.

The Warriors then used an 11-0 run, capped by an Ana Burch trey, to lead by 30 points at 1:25 remaining in the third. Stan State's biggest lead of the night was 35 points, at 87-52.

For Sanders-Curry, this marked her fourth consecutive double digit scoring game. She also had 14 points and 10 rebounds in last Saturday's game at UC San Diego.
