TURLOCK — With a pair of identical 4-1 wins, the Stanislaus State softball team took both games of the doubleheader on Saturday to sweep Cal State San Marcos in the four-game set.
The Warriors used 13 hits in game one with
Katelyn McDonald going 3-for-4. Then, in the finale,
Karina Callazo made her first start in 2016 with a two-hitter as the Warriors improved to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
After giving up a RBI double in the first inning, Callazo cruised. She retired 19 of the next 20 batters for the complete game. The only base runner she allowed after the first inning was a single in the sixth. That Cougar, Caylyn Rodriguez, was immediately removed from the base path with a pick-off play from catcher
Brianna Martens.
Callazo ended up with five strikeouts with one walk for her first win.
A four-run inning in the fourth was all the Warriors' needed for the win. Doubles by McDonald and
Amy Pedretti keyed the inning that also included a two-run single by
Morgan Balestreri.
In the opener, single runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings by Stan State was all the offense starter
Kylie Ragsdale needed. McDonald had three singles and
Alexus Martinez had two hits, including a run-scoring double in the second inning to lead the team.
Nicolette Vizcaino also went 2-for-3 and scored twice.
