Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors came up short on clinching No. 4 seed in loss to LA

LOS ANGELES - Unable to come back from a turnover filled first half, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team came up short in a 76-59 loss at Cal State L.A.

WIth the loss, the Warriors were not able to secure a first round home game for the CCAA Tournament and will have to wait at least another day to see if they get that extra home game to begin March Madness.

It was pure madness Thursday night for the Warriors, especially in the first half. Stan State turned the ball over 18 times in the first half before finishing with 34 turnovers.

Alysa Valentine led the Warriors with 19 points and seven rebounds, both team highs while Cassidy Sanders-Curry scored 14 more points but Stanislaus fell to 16-9 overall and 12-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

To get to play an extra home game in the opening round of the CCAA Tournament, the Warriors will have to root for a Sonoma State win at Cal State San Bernardino Friday night. If that doesn't happen, the Warriors then control their own fate on Saturday in a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The road defeat dropped the Warriors to 6-7 away from Fitzpatrick Arena this season, where they are an amazing 10-1.

But on Thursday night, it was Cal State L.A. holding home court winning its fourth straight in the Eagles Nest. After the Warriors opened with a 7-0 lead, L.A. took off on a 17-2 run that included eight Warrior turnovers to take a 17-9 lead. The bleeding didn't stop there. Sam Oliver's three-pointer as the final made basket in the first half capped another 19-7 run by the Golden Eagles as they led 36-22 at the break.

Stan State rallied back and got as close as four points, 56-52, at 6:03 left in the fourth quarter on a Sanders-Curry three-pointer. However, the Warriors never got closer. L.A. scored 16 of the game's final 18 points to run away in the end.

In the stat that the Warriors usually have the advantage, it was Cal State L.A. which converted those turnovers into 24 points. The Golden Eagles (9-16, 7-12 CCAA) stay alive in their hunt for a postseason tournament berth. They were led by Franeka Hall who had 19 points, seven rebounds and nine steals.

Stanislaus had entered the game as the No. 1 team in the league with a plus-4.28 turnover margin and grabs a CCAA-best 10.28 steals. Cal State L.A. had 29 steals to the Warriors' 12 on Thursday.

Saturday's regular season finale at Fitzpatrick Arena is at 5:30 p.m.
