San Bernardino takes twinbill, series in softball

SAN BERNARDINO — The Cal State San Benardino softball team managed to squeak by the Stanislaus State Warriors twice on Saturday to take a pair of games and win the series.

The Coyotes won two close games, 3-1 and 5-4, with the second in walk-off fashion to win the four-game set three games to one. CSUSB improved to 13-8 overall an 8-4 in the CCAA. The Warriors are now 8-9 overall and 5-7 in conference play.

Cassidy Duke provided most of the offense in game two going 2-for-3 with a double and a dinger to drive in three scores. Her two-run bomb in the third ining cut the deficit in half, 4-2. She also doubled in the seventh inning, driving in pinch runner Jill Costa, who ran for Katelyn McDonald, who also doubled.

All of the scoring in game one occurred in the sixth inning. Duke singled in Marissa Ortiz in the top of the sixth, but the Wariors left the bases loaded without further damage. In the home half of the sixth, the Coyotes plated three runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Amanda Herrera and another RBI double by Kaylee Gemmell.

Cassandra Williams, the CCAA pitcher of the week, won both games in the circle for CSUSB throwing 12 innings to improve her personal record to 11-4.

The Coyotes scored the winner in the series finale on a single and two Stanislaus errors.

Stan State will have a short break after returning home as the Warriors will host Cal State Dominguez Hills for a four-game conference series starting on Tuesday.
