Stan State pounds 'Cats in nightcap for DH split

TURLOCK — The prolific offense of the Stanislaus State softball team was on display in the nightcap of this key conference doubleheader Friday night as the Warriors defeated Chico State, 10-4, to earn the split.

Chico State (18-10, 15-9 CCAA) won the first game, 6-3, behind a three-hitter by Brooke Langeloh while Megan Bowley's grand slam dinger in the fifth decided the opener.

Stanislaus, which leads the CCAA with a league-best .326 batting average flexed its muscles in game two, scattering 12 hits in the victory to improve to 16-13 overall and 13-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors scored seven runs in the second inning to build a 9-3 lead and cruised behind a solid outing by Karina Callazo in the circle.

Callazo improved to 6-1 on the season by tossing the complete game. She gave up four runs — with two earned — on seven hits. She walked six but struck out four.

Now the offense. Ruby Quiralte, who belted a three-run homer in game one, doubled in two runs in the opening inning of the second game for a 2-1 Stan State lead. After Chico State took over the lead, 3-2, in the second inning, the Warriors took charge. Stanislaus scored seven runs on six hits in the inning — all after Jill Costa reached base on a strikeout-wild pitch. Morgan Balestreri, Nicolette Vizcaino and Alex Rowell each drove in two runs in the inning to highlight the scoring.

Quiralte finished the twinbill with six RBIs and went 3-for-5 with a double and a homer on the night. Vizcaino and Cassidy Duke also had three hits each. Quiralte had given the Warriors a 3-2 lead with a three-run bomb in the fourth inning of game one, after Langeloh had retired the first 10 batters she faced. Langeloh, though, did settle down after the homerun, sitting down nine of the final 11 batters to end the game.

With two outs in the fifth, Bowley went yard with the bags full of Wildcats for the 6-3 score.
