Kron shuts down #29 Cal Poly Pomona in twinbill split

TURLOCK —Chalk this one up as another great Jordan Kron start as the junior right-hander threw another complete game, this time over No. 29 Cal Poly Pomona in the Warriors' doubleheader split on Sunday.

More than 23 hours after the originally scheduled first pitch time for the three-game set, the series finally got started Sunday afternoon as Stanislaus State and Cal Poly Pomona each took a game on a dark, overcast, but dry day in Turlock.

The Warriors (17-15, 9-12 CCAA) won game one 10-1 and the Broncos (22-12, 14-8 CCAA) took the nightcap 6-3.

Kron threw yet another gem by utllizing the defense for his fourth complete game of the season to improve to 6-3. Kron gave up just one run on five hits, struckout two and walked one in the tidy outing. He's now gone the distance in three of his last four starts — and in these three complete game outings, he's allowed just one earned run in 27 innings.

On Sunday, Kron also got the run support as the Warriors used two four-run innings for the win. Aldo Koutsoyanopulos went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs, including a two-run double to highlight the four-run seventh. He also drove in a run in the four-run first inning and doubled in a score in the eighth.

Patrick Mulry stayed hot with a 3-for-4, three-run game, followed by a double in the second game while nearly missed a three-run bomb over the manual scoreboard. The team's leading hitter increased his season total to 35 hits and a .337 batting average. He's now 9-for-17 in the last five games.

After the Broncos plated a run in the second on a groundout, Kron cruised to out-duel CPP's Michael Koval. At one point he retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced, then finished the game with 12 consecutive outs. Only two Broncos reached base after Pomona scored that run in the second.

In the nightcap, Pomona scattered 12 hits, including a two-run homer to deep left-center field by Daniel Pitts to get the split. Jason Padlo went 3-for-4 and Nicholas Bruno was 2-for-4 in the second game to lead the Broncos. Padlo also had two hits in the first game for a five-hit day.

Kyle Nixon led Stan State with two hits, including a double while Mulry and Scott Stetson both also doubled to lead the Warriors. Stetson stole home in the first inning for a rare play to tie the game at 1-1.

Stanislaus State will play a non-conference game Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Warrior Baseball Field before traveling to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills next weekend.
