SEASIDE — After a long and wet day near the coast, the Stanislaus State softball team came up empty during its CCAA doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday.
After a total of 81 minutes of rain delay time during the first game, the Warriors lost 4-2 to the Otters. Then, the late afternoon game turned into a nightcap in an 11-inning affair as Stan State lost the heartbreaker, 1-0. In all more than 6 and a half hours of softball was played.
The pair of setbacks sent the Warriors further down the CCAA standings as they are now 24-27 overall and 16-22 in conference play. CSU Monterey Bay is 25-25, 15-22.
Game one started started 39 minutes late due to rain showers that hit half-hour before the scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch. Then, in the middle of the third inning the game was paused for another 42 minutes for a rain delay.
Once the game restarted, with the game tied at 2-2, Monterey Bay went ahead in the third when Courtney Hennings scored resulting from a throwing error. The Otters tagged on a fourth run in the fifth on a RBI single by Hennings to score Courtney Varela.
In the second game, Warrior starter
Karina Callazo appeared in her second consecutive extra-inning game with a solid 10-plus inning effort. She gave up six hits and struck out five in the outing before allowing the game's only run to score in the home half of the 11th. Hennings led off with a double and, with one out, Annelise Lopez doubled to left to score Hennings to end the game.
Callazo had tossed an eight-inning complete game shutout last Saturday in the Warriors' 1-0 win over Sonoma State in the series finale. But Friday night, she was out-dueled by CSUMB's Tori Pierucci. Pierucci gave up seven hits and struck out six Warriors in 11 innings.
At the plate,
Alex Rowell and
Morgan Balestreri each had two hits and drove in a run.
Amy Pedretti,
Alexus Martinez and
Nicolette Vizcaino each added two hits to add to the Warriors' 11-hit total. In game two,
Cassidy Duke and
Ruby Quiralte each had two hits.
The teams will meet again on Saturday — with no rain in the forecast — with a twinbill starting at Noon.
