TURLOCK — Ryan Paramo gave the Warriors a much needed lift on the mound while getting plenty of offensive support as Stanislaus State earned a must-win game in game two of Saturday's doubleheader against Sonoma State.
The Warriors beat the Seawolves 7-1 in the 7-inning game two after Sonoma State took game one 6-2, using 11 hits.
Sonoma State remains in the hunt for a CCAA tournament berth with a 15-16 CCAA record (17-25 overall). The Warriors are 21-21 overall and 12-18 in the CCAA.
At one point in the game, Paramo retired 12 consecutive Seawolves after giving up a leadoff walk in the third. By then, the offense provided a 6-0 lead. Two hits, two walks and a sac fly made it 2-0 after two innings. Then an Aldo Koutsoyanopulos bases clearing three-run double in the third highlighted a four-run frame that extended the Stan State lead to 6-0.
Patrick Mulry made it 7-0 in the fourth with his ninth homerun of the season, the most for a Warrior since Doug Porras hit 10 in 2010 (and he had a four-homer season finale game to reach that total).
Through six innings, Paramo had only allowed five baserunners — with just one reaching scoring position. Trying to earn a 7-inning complete game shutout, he went out for the seventh and got two outs but was lifted with the bases load and a run already in. Travis Johnston threw four pitches to get a grounder to first to end the game for the Warrior split.
Koutsoyanopulos went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in in the game and Cameron Irinaga was 2-for-2 with two doubles, including a RBI two-baggers down the left-field line as part of that four-run third inning.
In game one, despite two solo homers by Kyle Nixon, the Warriors came up short on offense while SSU scattered 11 hits for six runs. The Seawolves powered two bombs as well, one each from Grant St. Martin (a two-run opposite field shot in the wind in the first) and another by Tyler Glenn (a solo to right in the seventh).
Jordan Kron suffered the loss in game one after 7-innings of work. SSU starter Matt Hammond earned the win with his seven-inning outing.
