Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stan State records another shutout, wins Warrior Challenge

TURLOCK — Blanking its opponents for the third straight match, the Stan State women's soccer team claims the Warrior Challenge tournament title with a commanding 4-0 win over Southern Oregon Sunday night at Warrior Stadium.

The defense not only limited the other sides' chances, members of the unit scored too, as Maryssa McDuffy and Kinsey Pettigrew both netted goals in the victory as the Warriors improved to 5-0-0 on the season. Kirsten Coleman and Gabriela Vargas also scored for Stanislaus State.

Since McDuffy returned from to the pitch from an ankle injury, the Warriors have not allowed a score with three consecutive shutouts while out-scoring teams 7-0. Add that to the match against Colorado Mesa on Sept. 3, Stanislaus has not yield a goal in 336 minutes.

It was McDuffy who got Stanislaus on the board early, at 3:42, on Sunday night when she followed a direct kick from Gabby Squarcia that went off the cross bar.

"I was always taught to follow the shots. It was such a good shot I felt Gabby deserved something for it," McDuffy said.

In the 32nd minute, Kirsten Coleman made it 2-0 with a penalty kick try after Bella Rivera was knocked down in the box.

The scoring continued in the second half as another backline Warrior scored her first collegiate goal. After a scramble in front of the net, Pettigrew got the loose ball and sent it in for the goal in the 50th minute.

"Southern Oregon is an excellent squad so we had to take advantage of our opportunities," head coach Gabriel Bolton said about the Raiders, coached by former Warriors Jenni Roseberg and Lauren Thornton.

Finally, in the 79th minute, a Rivera corner kick from the near side was touched by Mayah Chambers to Vargas, who scored on a close-range goal for the final count.

The Warriors will carry the momentum into the conference season as the CCAA schedule begins in Southern California on Friday. Stanislaus State opens league play at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

"We tried some new things today in preparation for conference play and it threw us off our rhythm a bit," Bolton said. "The players were thinking a bit too much rather than just playing so our possession wasn't as crisp as we wanted."
