Toros end Warriors' scoreless streak as CCAA season opens

CARSON — A few streaks were snapped in Carson Friday late afternoon as Cal State Dominguez Hills slipped by Stanislaus State, 1-0, in women's soccer to open the California Collegiate Athletic Association season for both teams.

The Warriors gave up a goal for the first time in almost 400 minutes as the Toros scored at 63:51 by Abigail Ponce to hand Stanislaus its first loss in 2016. The Warriors are now 5-1-0, 0-1-0 CCAA heading into Sunday's contest at Cal State L.A.

Also ended was Stan State's dominance over Dominguez Hills as of late. Entering Friday's match, the Warriors had shut-out CSUDH in the last three meetings with three wins, outscoring the Toros, 9-0. Stan State had posted a 5-1 mark in the last six meetings.

"(Cal State) Dominguez Hills deserves a lot of credit for playing an outstanding match and giving a great effort. Every match in the CCAA is challenging," head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "We needed to be a bit more precise in our passing especially in the last third of the field. We will learn from this and continue to improve."

It was more or less a defensive match as teams managed just a total of 22 shots with seven on frame. CSUDH out-shot Stanislaus, 13-9 (4-3 on goal).

Gabby Squarcia, Jade Poon and Mikayla Clifford all managed to fire off two shots with Squarcia's both attempts on frame but were picked up by CSUDH goalie Elisa Martin, who finished with three saves. Haley Crook also had three saves.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is now 4-1-0 and 1-0-0 in CCAA.

Cal State L.A. defeateed Cal State East Bay, 2-0, Friday night at Jesse Owens Field.
