TURLOCK — A frantic and dramatic second half resulted in a controversial finish as Humboldt State took a 3-2 win from Stanislaus State Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
The Lumberjacks scored twice within 79 seconds, the latter a game-winning penalty kick score, to spoil the Warriors' conference home opener. Stanislaus State is still looking for its first win of the season as the Warriors fell to 0-4-3 overall and 0-3-0 in the CCAA.
Humboldt State improved to 3-3-1 overall and claimed its first conference win to move to 1-2-0.
However, the chippy, physical contest had drama and some controversy.
With Stanislaus ahead 2-1 after
Jaime Ceja's go-ahead score in the 62nd minute, things turned quickly in the final 10 minutes.
With a ball in play after a whistled deadball, a Lumberjack picked up a ball resting at the midfield flag and threw it into play. That ball from the throw-in was collected by Trice Smith who blasted over Stan State goalkeeper
Emerson Lovato's head to even the score. The shot from about 25 yards out with two balls on the field of play created some confusion by both sides.
However, the goal was allowed to stand after some discussion by the officials.
Moments later, a Lumberjack was knocked down in the box and Mumbi Kwesele converted on the penalty kick at 84:26 for the game-winner.
The Warriors were able to put-up some last minute efforts but was not able to force extra time. A
Manny Villegas shot in the final seconds was saved by Chris Cherms to keep the 3-2 score. Robert Quintero, who started the game in goal for HSU, had six saves as the Lumberjacks turned away a furious offensive attack by Stan State. The Warriors ended up out-shooting the Jacks, 22-8.
Luis Hernandez had scored the Warriors' first goal in the 60th minute with an assist from
Willie Gomez. That score had tied the match at 1-1 after HSU took a lead in the 50th minute.
Stanislaus will have to regroup and look for a victory on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against Sonoma State.
