TURLOCK —
Jade Poon scored twice in a match for the second time this season, as the junior forward propelled the Warriors to a solid 2-0 win over visiting Humboldt State Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
Looking for its first conference win, Stan State dominated possessions — especially on offense — to improve to 6-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in CCAA play. The anemic-offense Lumberjacks were shutout for the fifth time this season to drop to 2-6-0, 1-2-0 CCAA.
Poon's first goal on the night was a beauty — one she didn't even see.
Nicole Larson served a free kick from in front of the bench into a sea of players to the far post. Poon out-positioned and out-jumped others and headed in to make it 1-0 at 58:26.
"I didn't even see it go in. All I knew was I headed it well but was turned so I didn't see it go in. I just saw Kirsten going 'Yeah!'," Poon said.
Poon then made it 2-0 in the 89th minute after getting a ball from the end line to the top of the six-yard box for the score off the left post.
"Those were to great goals by Jade. She's been working extremely hard in our games to create chances," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "It was nice to see her finish them tonight."
The last time Poon scored was on Sept. 3 when she scored twice to lead the Warriors to a 2-1 win over Colorado Mesa. She now has five goals this season and 25 in her career, just four shy of moving up No. 2 on the Stan State all-time list behind only Karenee Demery (75).
The Warrior defense again held the opponents in check. Humboldt State managed just two shots, in the first half, both on free kicks. Stan State ended up out-shooting the Jacks 14-2 with a 10-1 corner kick advantage.
"Defensively we were very strong. I thought (goalkeeper)
Haley Crook, our backs and defensive midfielders played excellent," Bolton added.
HSU goalkeeper Alex Dumas picked up four saves, include two incredible bunch-outs late in the game that prevented further Stanislaus damage.
The Warriors will host rival Sonoma State Sunday at 2 p.m. The 22nd ranked Seawolves beat Cal State East Bay, 2-0, Friday night for their third straight 2-0 CCAA win to improve to 5-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in league play.
