Stan State challenged #19 UAFS, up-ended by Rollins

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Unfazed by the fact that they had to play two top 20 teams in consecutive matches, the Warriors challenged — and took a set from — No. 19 Arkansas-Fort Smith before falling in four sets in the first of two matches on Saturday.

Stanislaus State played the UAFS Lions tough throughout the match before the 18-25, 25-27, 25-21, 16-25 win by Arkansa-Fort Smith (3-0) during the second day of the Springhill Suites Invitational at the Alaska Airlines Center. They wrapped up their trip to Alaska with another tough match as they were defeated by Rollins College (2-2) in straight sets, 22-25, 15-25, 16-25.

Against the Lions, five different Stan State players had eight or more kills, led by Sara Schell's 11 spikes, and Victoria Larsen and Paige Walker each collected 10. Jocelyn Cervantes led with 18 digs, while three of her teammates also dug double digits. Maddi Seidl had a strong morning with 42 assists.

While facing the Rollins College Tars, Larsen had a .381 hitting percentage with 11 kills. Right side hitter Lindsay Skadeland posted a .750 hitting percentage, and Morgan Miller also held her own with a .300 hitting percentage. Cervantes led her team in digs once again, and Seidl had 26 assists.

The Lions were led by Payton Hamilton with 18 kills, and the Tars were led by Shannon McDonough with 15 kills.

For the week, Blair Ehrlich led the team with 36 kills and 44 digs as she was named to the All-tournament team.

The Warriors, now 1-3, will head home to host the inaugural West Region Volleyball Showcase Thursday through Saturday of next week. At home at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena, the Warriors will face off against the 2015's seventh and eigth place teams in the Pacific West Conference and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
