Warriors nearly upset #17 Cal State San Bernardino, again

TURLOCK – Despite a new career high from Taylor Massengale, the Stanislaus State volleyball team fell when fighting to upset #17 Cal State San Bernardino for the second straight time at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena on Friday night.

Winning sets one and four, the Warriors (5-8, 2-2 CCAA) took the nationally ranked Coyotes (9-3, 3-1 CCAA) into a five-set battle for the second year in a row before losing 19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 11-25, 15-13. In 2015, the Warriors defeated the Coyotes in five sets, winning the decisive set 15-13. CSUSB was ranked No. 17 at the time, too, in that match last Nov. 7.

Massengale set a new career high with a whopping 17 kills (.394). She committed just four errors on hitting with 33 attempts. She had started the season with a then-best 16 kills against Westminster College on Sept. 2.

Maddi Seidl had a season high with 48 assists. Her previous best this season was 45 assists on Sept. 10 versus Western Oregon. She had surpassed 50 assists in a match twice last season.

The Warriors held a strong back row with four players digging double digits. Hailey Gruetzmacher led with 19, Sarah Schell and Blair Ehrlich followed with 12, and Seidl dug 10.

The Coyotes were led by Lauren Nicholson with 23 kills. Two other Coyotes had double digit kills, Malika O'Brien with 11 and Kaili Scott with 10. Setter Jayann DeHoog had 54 assists and libero Abby Vollkommer had 30 digs.

The Warriors will be back in Fitzpatrick Arena Saturday night as they take on Cal Poly Pomona (4-9, 0-4 CCAA) at 7 pm. Pomona lost at Chico State in straight sets Friday night.
