Stan State racks up points to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills

TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State men's basketball team needed to get past the 60-point mark for success and the Warriors did just that and more in an 86-76 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

Five Warriors scored in double-digits and the Warriors posted a season-high in points to snap a four-game skid to improve to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Stan State is now 5-1 in games when they score more than 60 points this season (0-9 otherwise).

Kaelen Mitchell had 18 points, Jaelen Ragsdale and Joey Bennett each netted 13 to lead the Warriors. Richard Medina and Vondel Faniel chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Keiland Callum led all players with seven rebounds and Medina dished five assists.

Cal State Dominguez Hills ended a three-game winning streak despite 25 points from Vincent Golson. The Toros are now 8-5, 4-3 CCAA.

A 10-2 Stanislaus State run that closed out the first half turned a 7-point game into a 15-point Warrior lead at the break, 40-25. The Warriors would shoot a scorching 56.5 percent in the second half to pull ahead by as many as 20 points behind three pointers by Medina and Ragsdale.

In the end, the Warriors tallied 52.7 percent shooting from the floor and 45 percent (9 of 20) from the arch. They also made 19 of 24 free throws for 79.2 percent — all three percentages are season highs for Stan State during a CCAA game.

The Warriors have now defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills twice this season. They had posted a 64-45 win back on Nov. 19 in a non-conference tilt here in Turlock. CSUDH won 57-42 on Dec. 2 in Carson in the other meeting.

Cal State L.A. (7-10, 3-6 CCAA) narrowly lost to Chico State, 89-82, Friday night and will be the Warriors' opponent Saturday night. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m., following the women's game.
