TURLOCK — Despite dominating on the boards, Stanislaus State came up short Saturday night as the Warriors lost to Cal State L.A. 66-59.
Cal State L.A. used a 16-0 run in the second half to erase a 12-point Stanislaus lead as the Golden Eagles took care of the basketball to sprint past the Warriors to improve to 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assocation.
The Warriors went cold without a field goal during a 4-minute period and fell to 5-11 overall and 2-7 CCAA.
Vondel Faniel posted another double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Kaelen Mitchell scored 13 and
Kyle Gouveia chipped in 11 points with two blocks.
A glaring state that made the difference in the game was ball handling. The Warriors committed 17 turnovers which led to 18 L.A. points compared to the Golden Eagles' five turnovers (two Stan State points). That more or less canceled out the Warriors' ability to score second-chance points. Stan State pulled 15 offensive rebounds for 15 second chance points. L.A. had five.
In fact, Stanislaus out-rebounded the Warriors, 46-26, on the night.
L.A. was led by Jordan Wilson's 16 points but 7-foot-1 Geoffrey Frid took charge in the second half to finish with 14 points and four blocked shots.
Despite L.A.'s late surge, the Warriors were still within two points with 3:49 to play. However, the Golden Eagles converted on their free throw chances and closed out the game on a 7-2 run for the final count.
Stanislaus hits the road next week with games at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday and Humboldt State on Saturday.
