POMONA — Trailing by 10 points late in the game, the Stanislaus State men's basketball made a strong effort for a comeback before coming up just short in a 55-54 loss at Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg Arena Thursday night.
A
Jaelen Ragsdale three-pointer with time expiring was off and
Vondel Faniel was about to tip in the rebound for a layup, but the Warriors dropped the one-point decision to fall to 2-8 in CCAA play (5-12 overall). A struggling Pomona program managed to eek-out the win to improve to 4-10, 2-8 CCAA.
Faniel finished the night as the top scorer in the game with 18 points and Ragsdale chipped in 12 points. Pomona was led by Daylan Lawrence, who had 11 points. Faniel, who also had 10 rebounds, picked up his second consecutive double-double total. He has posted double-doubles in three of the last four games.
A close game turned into a 10-point Broncos lead with 4:28 left to play after a Jordan Ogundiran three-pointer that capped an 8-2 run. But the Warriors answered with eight straight points as they held Pomona without a field goal the rest of the game. Ragsdale scored five points during that run with
Richard Medina nailing a trey as well.
But the difference turned out to be a Justin Young free throw with 40 seconds left to play.
Stanislaus was sharp on the foul line Thursday night, hitting on 14 of 18 tries while shooting 43.6 percent from the floor.
The Warriors will go all the way back up the state and will end up in Arcata late Friday for a Saturday night affair with the Humboldt State Lumberjacks.
