Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors hang on to post first win at Humboldt State

ARCATA — Against a team that defends its home court as good as any one in Division II, the Stanislaus State men's basketball team hangs on and survives a barrage of HSU three-point tries to beat the Lumberjacks, 76-72, Saturday night.

The Warriors won in Arcata for the first time during the CCAA era, ending a 12-game losing streak in Humboldt County, to improve to 6-12 overall and 3-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. This came after an one-point loss Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Lumberjacks, losers of six straight — and surprisingly three straight home games — fell to 8-10, 3-8 in conference play as well.

Vondel Faniel picked up another double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jaelen Ragsdale made 10 free throws — including an important one with 1.8 seconds left to make it a four-point game — for 16 points. Kyle Gouveia and Kaelen Mitchell each scored 14 and Richard Medina chipped in 10.

Stanislaus State utilized its strong defense to hold Humboldt State down, controlled the rebounding game and capitalized on its trips to the free throw line all night.

The Warriors held HSU to 34 percent shooting in the first half to build a 38-27 halftime lead. Then they jumped out with a 12-4 run for a 19-point advantage early in the second half and never surrendered.

Stanislaus out-rebounded Humboldt 53-30 on the night, including 20 offensive rebounds. The Warriors were also way-ahead in the free throw game, converting on 25 of 38 free throw chances to HSU's 2-for-5. HSU was whistled for 25 fouls on the night to Stan State's seven.

Despite all of that, HSU made a run late by hitting three-pointers. In the end, HSU tried 49 treys and made 14 for 28.6 percent. Stanislaus took 50 shots total.

Nikhil Lizotte had five three pointers to finish with 17 points.

Before the night, Stan State had gone 0-12 in games at either Lumberjack Arena or East Gym on the campus of Humboldt State since the 2004 season. The Warriors were 0-11 there since HSU joined the CCAA in 2007.
