Stan State unable to defend hot shooting UCSD Tritons

TURLOCK — UC San Diego found a night to have one of its better shooting games — and it came against one of the better defensive teams in Division II.

The Tritons made nearly 50 percent of their shots to defeat the Stanislaus State Warriors, 72-54, Friday night inside Fitzpatrick Arena. UC San Diego remains at top of the CCAA standings with Chico State by improving to 10-2 in league play (17-3 overall). The Warriors fell to 6-13, 3-9 CCAA.

Stan State entered the weekend with the eighth best defense in Division II based on opponents' shooting percentage at 39.1. On the other side of the tape, UCSD was the second worst shooting team in the CCAA at 40.8.

However, the Tritons came out hot, hitting 7 of 13 with three three-pointers in the first 10 minutes for a 17-9 lead en route to a 34-25 halftime lead. They maintained a solid pace in the second half and built a lead as large as 25 points. UCSD ended up shooting 46.6 percent (27 for 58).

The Warriors got within six points to start the second half after a Vondel Faniel three-point play. However, an 11-0 run by UCSD turned that into a 49-32 advantage at 13:39.

Kaelen Mitchell led the Warriors with 12 points and Kyle Gouveia scored 11. Faniel was held to just five points on 19 minutes of play, ending his streak of consecutive double-digit games at five. He had also earned double-doubles in each of the three previous games.

Another odd stat for Stanislaus was rebounding. Stan State was out-rebounded (31-27) for the first time in seven games. The last time that happened was on Dec. 30 -- at UC San Diego.

Adam Klie was again UCSD's top scorer with 20 points. He also had seven rebounds.

The Warriors will look to regroup on Saturday as they host Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 p.m.
