Coyotes edge Stanislaus State on buzzer beater

TURLOCK — Two key offensive rebounds and a buzzer beater lifted the visiting Coyotes as they edged the Warriors, 66-64, Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Jordan Williams was at the right place at the right time as he grabbed a rebound off of a Everett Turner long miss and nailed the game-winner as the time expired to help CSUSB improve to 9-8 overall and 5-7 in CCAA play. The Warriors dropped the heartbreaker to fall to 6-14 overall and 3-10 in league play.

Stan State dominated the rebounding game all night — until the last CSUSB possession.

After a Blake McBride miss from long distance, the ball flew past Kyle Gouveia into the hands of Ramon Eaton for an offensive board with 10.4 second left. After a Coyotes timeout, Turner worked his way around the perimeter for his try, which hit the front of the rim falling into the awaiting hands of Williams just under the basket for the winner.

Vondel Faniel picked up his seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds with Richard Medina leading Stan State with 12 points. Two other Warriors — Nate Henry (11 points) and Gouveia (10) — also reached double figures.

Turner finished with 16 points and Khleem Perkins had 15 with Eaton ending up with 13 points.

The Warriors had out-rebounded CSUSB 37-21 for the game, but committed 17 turnovers against the Coyotes' four. Those 17 miscues resulted in 19 Coyote points (the Warriors had two points off turnovers). Before the final San Bernardino possession, the Warriors had pulled 31 defensive rebounds.

In a tight game with two different halves, the Warriors had the lead in the first 20 minutes the entire time until an Eli Brown trey with seven seconds left before the break to tie the game at 34. That momentum carried into the second half with CSUSB taking charge and led by as many as eight points.

However, Stan State made a 7-0 run highlighted by a Nate Henry's three-pointer at 10:56 to play to briefly take an 1-point advantage. But the Coyotes answered with an 8-0 run to surge ahead.

In the final two minutes, Jaelen Ragsdale would make a layup and convert on two free throws to tie the score at 62-62 before a Perkins jumper with 54 ticks left. Medina would again tie the game at 64-64 on a nice dribble drive layup to set up the final San Bernardino possession.
