Warriors inch up to second place in the CCAA with win over CSUDH

TURLOCK – Stanislaus State women's basketball posted another win with a 54-43 victory against Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

Now 8-9 overall and 6-2 in conference, the Warriors took down the Toros (4-10, 1-6 CCAA) to slide up to second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State L.A., the Warriors' opponent on Saturday, lost at Chico State 66-62 Friday.

Reana Hardin was the team's leading scorer with 13 points. Cassidy Sanders-Curry followed with 11 points, Riley Holladay had nine and Ana Burch scored eight points.

It was a strong rebounding night for the Warriors, out-rebounding the Toros 40-33. Erika Larsen led with nine rebounds, and four more Warriors had five or more rebounds. Sanders-Curry caught eight, Burch and Holladay each tallied six rebounds, and Hardin grabbed five.

Stan State came out with a slow start, trailing behind the Toros until they tied it up at 25-25 with less than two minutes to go in the first half.  The Warriors made a quick come back in the third quarter, ending the period with a 16-point lead at 45-29.

The Warriors were able to shut down the Toros' top gun Imari Brown quickly into the first half. Brown had a mere four points in the first two periods, wracking up three fouls in just 11 minutes. She tallied her fourth foul half way into the third quarter, and eventually fouled out of the game before the clock ran out. Brown, who entered the night scoring 15.5 points a game finished with 12 points.

Stan State shot at 33.8 percent, shooting 38.7 percent in the second half alone. The Warriors struggled from behind the 3-point arc, ending 2-for-18, but went 23-for-68 from the field overall.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had 27 turnovers in the game with 16 Stan State steals — led by Sanders-Curry's five. The Toros shot 36.4 percent overall.

Tomorrow night the Warriors will be back at Fitzpatrick Arena to host another CCAA opponent, Cal State L.A., at 5:30 p.m.
