TURLOCK – In Saturday night's CCAA matchup, Stanislaus State women's basketball came up short against Cal State San Bernardino losing 65-68 at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
Managing to hold their third place spot in the conference standings, the Warriors are now 10-12 overall and 8-5 in the CCAA with the three-game skid. The Coyotes advanced to sixth place in the CCAA with their 10-6, 7-5 CCAA record.
Cassidy Sanders-Curry led the Warriors with 20 points and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Reana Hardin was right behind Sanders-Curry with 19 points and
Riley Holladay led with 12 rebounds. Holladay also tallied four assists, two steals, and one block.
Stan State came out with a slow start, trailing by nine points at the end of the first period (13-22) and five at halftime (32-37). The Warriors made a run for it in the third quarter, taking a seven-point lead at 50-43 after a 16-4 run. Sanders-Curry had 10 of her points during that stretch.
In the final quarter Cal State San Bernardino went on a 13-point run turning a seven-point Warrior lead into a six-point Coyote lead. With 1:16 left to go in the game a Holladay layup even-up the game at 63-63. But, 24 seconds later a Mya Johnson banked-shot three-pointer gave the Coyotes their final lead.
The Warriors improved their game from last night shooting 36.1 percent from the field, and 77.3 percent from the 3-point arc. Stan State had a tough night behind the three-point line, shooting a mere 18.2 percent (4 of 22).
Johnson led the Coyotes with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Casie Johnson had 14 points, Taylor Goldsberry had 12 and Sabrea Coleman had 11.
Stan State basketball will be on the road next week at San Francisco State and Sonoma State before returning home on Thursday, Feb. 9 to host Cal State San Marcos.
