Stan State suffers defeat against top defense in CCAA

TURLOCK — Statistically, Sonoma State is the best defensive team in the conference. By the numbers, the Warriors don't win games when they don't score at least 60 points.

Well, against a Seawolves team which allows just 59.3 per game this season, the Warriors weren't able to put the ball in the basket enough in a 61-47 loss Friday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Stanislaus State dropped its third straight and fell to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association to open this home stretch where the Warriors will play six of eight games at home. Sonoma State extends its win-streak to three games and is now 9-4 overall and 5-2 in league play.

The Warriors will have their work cut-out for them when they host 21st ranked San Francisco State as the Gators will bring their 12-1 record to Turlock Saturday night.

A couple of negative numbers to chew on 13 games into the season. In games when they are trailing at the 5-to-go mark, the Warriors are now 0-8. In games when they score less than 60 points, they are now 0-8.

Friday night, the Warriors were led by Kaelen Mitchell's 14 points. Kyle Gouveia had seven rebounds and six points. Jaelen Ragsdale chipped in seven points.

Jordan Fleck led SSU with 14 points (9 of 9 from the foul line) and Armani Nicolis chipped in 11.

Stan State started the second half with six straight points, but Sonoma State answered with a 9-0 run for a 19-point, 45-26, lead at 14:05. The Seawolves would cruise from there as the Warriors never got closer than 12 points after a Nate Henry triple with 6:46 remaining.
