No. 21 SF State hands Warriors another setback

TURLOCK — The 21st ranked San Francisco State Gators upped their record to 13-1 as they survived an off-shooting night to defeat Stanislaus State, 65-50, Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Despite dominating the boards, the Warriors lost their fourth straight contest to fall to 4-10, 1-6 CCAA. Stanislaus State will look to regroup with a pair of home games next weekend during this home-cooking stretch. Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. visits next week on Friday and Saturday with Stan State playing six of eight games at home in the month of January.

Saturday night against the usually high-scoring Gators, the Warriors did limit SF State to just 37.5 percent shooting from the field — its second worst shooting percentage of the year. SFSU lost to Chico State — its only defeat — when they shot 37 percent. Still, the anemic Stanislaus offense scored fewer than 60 points for the ninth time this season.

The Warriors (4-10, 1-6 CCAA) were led by the inside big men of Vondel Faniel and Kyle Gouveia with 16 and 15 rebounds, respectively. They combined to out-rebound the entire SF State team, which had 30 boards. Faniel scored 19 points to lead all scorers for his third double-double of the season. The 16 rebounds is his career-high.

San Francisco State improved to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in league play behind Derrick Brown's 16 points (four three-pointers), Nick Calcaterra's 12 (two treys) and Coley Apsay's 11 (two triples). The Gators made 10 three-pointers and were 7 of 9 on the foul line.

Faniel carried the Warriors on offense with his 19 points on 9 of 13 shooting. He even made his first three-pointer of his Stan State career. Jaelen Ragsdale chipped in 10 points, but the rest of the team scored a total of 21 points on 9 of 35 shooting.

A 16-0 SF State run late in the first half turned a 15-15 game into a 31-15 Gators lead after a Calcaterra three-pointer. SFSU would lead by as many as 22 points in the second half, but the Warriors did get within 13 points with 4:56 to play when Joey Bennett capped a little 6-0 spurt with a layup.

The Gators were held 17 points below their average of 82.1 points per game. They had shot a sizzling 48.9 percent before Saturday night's game at the Fitz.
