TURLOCK — For nearly 50 minutes, the up-start Warriors had the lead against one of the best teams in the West Region. But Cal Poly Pomona turned in on to score twice in four minutes late in the second half to win 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Warrior Stadium.
Sean Bender's goal in the 28th minute gave Stanislaus State a 2-1 lead before the Warriors dropped to 5-4-4 overall and 2-3-3 in the CCAA. Cal Poly Pomona escapes Turlock with its fifth straight win to improve to 12-3-0, 8-2-0 CCAA.
Ahmed Mohammed had tied the game in the 16th minute on a nice turn-and-shoot attempt after collecting a
Rafael Chavez corner kick. Bender's goal was set up by
Ryan Chaney whose through ball in traffic got past the Broncos to find Bender to give Stan State the lead.
Cal Poly Pomona had taken an early 1-0 lead 3:37 in as it was awarded a penalty kick try. Sergi Monso converted on his fourth PK for his CCAA-leading 16th goal of the season.
Despite sitting back with more defenders in the second half, the younger Stanislaus State team couldn't keep up with the prolific Pomona offense. The Broncos first used a free kick to set up the equalizer by Matthew Perez in the 73rd minute. Then in the 77th minute, Monso struck again — this time a blast from the top of the 18-yard box for the game-winner.
Monso now leads the CCAA with 17 goals and the high flying Broncos lead the conference with 44 goals. The second best scoring team in the league, San Francisco State, has 26.
The Warriors have two more home matches remaining in the regular season as they will host Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay next weekend.
