Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stan State remains undefeated at home after win over Cal Poly Pomona

TURLOCK — Perhaps what the Warriors needed are some home games to start winning and climbing up the CCAA Standings.

Prior to kicking off each home match, a sound bite of "Protect This House" is played over the stadium sound system — and the Stan State women's soccer team does just that as the Warriors beat Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, Sunday afternoon.

With their third straight CCAA victory — and a weekend sweep of conference opponents for six points — the Warriors might be making another late-season run into the postseason tournament.

Now, 5-0-2 in seven contests at home this season, the Warriors improved to 8-4-2 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play. With four matches to play in the regular season, the Warriors are three points out of sixth place. The top six teams in the final standings qualify to play in the CCAA Championship tournament.

Last season, after starting out 1-5 in league play, the Warriors went 5-1 in their final six games (starting with two home victories) to sneak into the postseason.

"I like how we are continuing to grow as a team. The momentum we are building is exciting," said head coach Gabriel Bolton, who tagged on one more to his Stan State career victories, now with 151.

On Sunday, the teams played evenly in the first half for a scoreless game at the break. Cal Poly Pomona peppered the Warriors with shots to start the second half, but the Warriors held ground and composure until they had a chance to strike.

Then the tide turned in the 60th minute with Stan State on the attack. A Jade Poon shot went just side before a Gabriela Vargas shot that was blocked by a defender. The latter attempt set-up the corner kick that resulted in the only goal.

Bella Rivera sent a beauty to the far post with Jenna Zuniga out-jumping everyone for a header. Zuniga's chance hit the post and rebounds to an unmarked Shawna McLaughlin for the eventual game-winning goal.

"I'm very please with not only the result but how hard we battled. Cal Poly is an excellent team and their goalkeeper had a phenomenal match," Bolton commented.

Ricki Ives had two saves for Cal Poly Pomona and Stan State goalkeeper Haley Crook picked up three saves.

The Warriors hope to keep the home-pitch momentum when they host two more contests next weekend with Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay visiting.
