LOS ANGELES — A late Golden Eagles goal with five minutes left to play turned the visiting Warriors away as host Cal State L.A. defeated the Warriors, 2-1, in men's soccer Thursday night.
Steven Eberle capped off his great night with a goal on a give-and-go play in the 85th minute to lead L.A. to the win — the Golden Eagles' fifth in the teams last seven meetings. For Stan State, the loss ended the Warriors' bid to get into the CCAA tournament as they dropped to 6-5-5 overall and 3-4-4 in conference play.
With 13 points (and a points per match average of 1.18), the Warriors can not catch teams ahead of them in the standings. Six teams have at least 17 points (potential 1.42 ppm) and even if Stan State can upset Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday, they can only reach 16 points (1.33 ppm).
Cal State L.A. improved to 11-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the CCAA to keep its postseason hopes alive.
Eberle had assisted on L.A.'s equalizing goal in the 57th minute, but the Warriors had the upper-hand prior to that.
Bradlee Taylor scored in the 41st minute on a direct kick that was perfectly sent to the upper-V, out of everyone's reach, for the 1-0 lead.
"Bradlee's goal was the goal of the season, but too bad we couldn't have taken care of the rest of the business," head coach
Dana Taylor said.
The Warriors did avoid the shutout against L.A.'s goalkeeper Steven Barrera, whose eight shutouts leads the conference. Stan State never let-up in the second half, peppering Barrera with shots and chances. Barrera earned six saves to preserve the Golden Eagles win.
Stanislaus State will wrap-up the season on Sunday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kickoff is at 11:30 a.m.
