Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stan State's tourney hopes still alive despite coming up short Thursday night

LOS ANGELES — Despite some strong efforts late in the match against Cal State L.A., the Stanislaus State women's soccer team fell short, 2-1, Thursday night at the Jesse Owens Track. Still, the Warriors' hope of qualifying for the CCAA tournament is still alive.

The loss dropped the Warriors' records to 10-5-2 overall and 5-5-1 in the CCAA — or 16 points (1.45 points per match average) — with one match remaining, on Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Warriors had won five straight conference matches prior to Thursday.

Stan State will have to win on Sunday (for 1.58 ppm) and hope for a no-better-than tie result by either Cal Poly Pomona (1.50 ppm) or Cal State San Marcos (1.55 ppm) to earn a berth in the postseason tournament. The Warriors can also qualify with a tie (1.42 ppm), a Cal Poly Pomona loss (1.42) and a San Francisco State tie (1.33) or worse.

With a scoreless tie coming out of the break, Cal State L.A. (9-3-3, 7-2-2 CCAA) scored twice in less than three minutes to explode to a 2-0 lead. CCAA scoring leader Paulina Chaidez gave her team the 1-0 lead at 52:03 with her 10th goal of the season. At 54:53, Zarette Munoz-Aguila made it 2-0 on a goal assisted by CChaidez.

The Warriors battled back while Ilena Rivera capitalizing on a Golden Eagles mistake to cut the deficit in half. Rivera took a failed clearance for an open shot for an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute.

Stan State would press on offense and had four great chances to score in the final 15 minutes. Shots by Gabriela Vargas, Sadie Montague and Shawna McLaughlin were all saved by LA keeper Adriana Maldonado, who finished with five saves.

Haley Crook kept the Warriors close with eight saves of her own.
