POMONA - On Friday night at Kellogg Arena the Stanislaus State volleyball team came close to victory, battling with Cal Poly Pomona for five sets before leaving empty handed.
The Warriors fell to the Broncos 12-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23, and 13-15 and are now 2-19 overall and 2-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal Poly Pomona advances to 10-11 and 6-7 in league.
Rachel Klopfer dominated the match offensively, leading both teams with 19 kills and setting herself a new season best..
Assisting offensively
Sierra Adams tallied 14 kills from the right side and setter
Jordan Tilley ran the Warriors' offense with 48 assists, also a new personal best.
On defense,
Sara Schell led with 18 digs and
Kaitlyn Iwamoto added 17 more digs for the Warriors.
Morgan Miller had a decent night defensively at the net totaling five blocks for Stan State.
The Warriors had a delayed start in Friday's match, falling behind 0-6 to start off set one. Stan State allowed four more runs of three or more points giving the Bronocs the lead they needed to win the set. On the hunt for redemption the Warriors led set two, gaining an eight-point advantage on CPP (19-11) before taking the set.
Set three, similar to the first, gave Cal Poly Pomona the advantage with an abundance of Warrior errors and Bronco point runs. After again falling behind, Stan State earned a seven-point run (20-17) in set four to extend the match.
Four consecutive points for the Warriors helped Stan State take a 5-2 lead to start set five. Stan State managed to keep hold of that lead until the Broncos tied the score at 12-12 and sped ahead to take the victory.
Kristen Hamlin led Cal Poly Pomona's offense with 15 kills and Jenna Goldsberry followed with 14 kills. Setter Alina Smith facilitated the Broncos offense with 53 assists. On defense, Samantha Figueroa led CPP's aggressive defense with 21 digs followed by Alexandria Bollier with 18 digs, and Andrea Bosnic with 17 digs.
Tomorrow night the Warriors will head to Cal Stat San Bernardino to challenge their last CCAA South foe of the season. The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Coussoulis Arena.
