Offense on a roll in non-conference win over Benedictine-Mesa

TURLOCK — Sean Bender scored two of the three Warrior goals in a seven-minute span as Stanislaus State defeated Benedictine-Mesa, 4-0, with little trouble Thursday night at Warrior Stadium.

As as a low, orange harvest moon rises over the buildings east of the Stadium, the offense rose to the occasion against the NAIA program as the Warriors improved to 5-3-3 overall. Stan State out-shot the Redhawsk (5-4-0), 15-0 in the first half before the 24-4 final tally.

Patrick Colombana didn't even have to break a sweat as little action played out on his side of the field in the first half. Tomas Zajfert was in goal in the second half and made an easy save for the combined shutout.

The Warriors blasted the Redhawks early but were not able to score with their first 10 shot attempts — until Joseph Mayorca tapped in an easy score when BU-Mesa goalkeeper Luke Boudreau came out to stop him. Mayorca had received a nice long pass from midfield from Rafael Chavez.

Mayorca's goal, which came at 31:39 opened up the scoring. On Stan State's very next shot attempt, at exactly two minutes later, Sean Bender scored again as Adrian Yepez found his feet in the box. In the 39th minute, Bender's knocked in a header from a Bradlee Taylor corner kick to make it 3-0 heading into the break.

Stanislaus would tagged on another in the 86th minute on a Khalil Kirksey score, assisted by Ahmed Mohammed.

The Redhawks, out of Mesa, Ariza., are in the Valley to take on California Pacific Conference foe UC Merced on Saturday.

The Warriors have enjoyed some scoring success lately with nine goals in three matches after being shutout for four matches prior to that. They hope to continue the offensive out-pour a week from Friday, on Oct. 13, in a pivotal CCAA match against Cal State San Bernardino.
