TURLOCK - Earning their first CCAA victory,
Zahria Hendrix's well-rounded game led the Stanislaus State women's basketball team to a victory over Cal Poly Pomona 72-65 at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Adding a win to their record the Warriors are now 2-2 and 1-1 in the CCAA while the Broncos have fallen to 1-3 and 0-1 after their first league matchup.
Hendrix led the Warriors in points, assists, and steals against the Broncos. She tallied 17 points going 5-for-11 from the field and 6-for-10 from the free-throw line, while tacking on four assists, and four steals.
Lizzy Alexander was the Warriors next highest point scorer with 15 points, and
Erika Larsen had 11 points. Larsen also led the led game with 13 rebounds.
The Warriors fell behind at the start of the game, giving the Broncos a nine-point lead in the first four minutes (2-11). Tying it up just before the end of the first quarter (17-17), the Warriors fought to put themselves back in the game. After six lead changes in the second quarter, Stan State pushed ahead 36-32.
Speeding into the second half, four consecutive banked shots by the Warriors gave them an 11-point lead (45-34) and the confidence they needed to take the win. Stan State maintained the lead for the duration of the game with aggressive defense.
Stan State shot 37.9 percent as a team from the field. They shot 37.5 percent from the three-point arc and 51.6 percent from the free-throw line.
Casey McWilliam led the Broncos with 15 points and Jackie Ricketson had 11 points and five assists. Alyssa Benton and Chelsea Waddy-Blow each had 10 rebounds.
The Warriors will be on the road next week, with a non-conference game against Fresno Pacific on Tuesday, and another CCAA matchup against Chico State on Saturday.
