TURLOCK — Dominating the game in all aspects, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team took home a 20-point victory over Holy Names in a nonconference matchup at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena on Monday night, defeating the Hawks 73-53.
Adding another win to their resume the Warriors are now 4-3 overall, pushing Holy Names down to 1-7.
Every single Warrior saw the court against Holy Names, but
Lizzy Alexander earned her respects as the lead with 20 points, a new career high for herself. She also had four assists, three rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. For the fifth consecutive game,
Erika Larsen scored in the double digits with 11 points, and
Caprina Pipion scored 10 points. As the target for Holy Names fouls, Pipion was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Zahria Hendrix was the leading rebounder for the Warriors with seven grabs at the hoop. Both Larsen and
Kyanna Davis had six rebounds, and Pipion had five rebounds.
Stan State excelled in all aspects of the game, out-working the Hawks out on the court. The Warriors totaled 40 rebounds to Holy Names' 38 rebounds, earned 13 assists to HNU's eight assists, had nine steals to the Hawks' seven steals, and gave up 19 turnovers while Holy Names gave away 21 turnovers.
Stan State struggled to come out with energy, unable to pull ahead in the first quarter. Eight points by Holy Names' Ariana Hernandez, including two three-pointers, made it tough for the Warriors to keep up.
Bouncing back quickly in the second quarter, a jumper by
Samantha Rudd and a three-pointer by
Caitlin Keding put the Warriors in the lead where they stayed for the remainder of the game (18-15). Stan State improved their game with tough defense, only allowing the Hawks to score nine points in the entire second quarter.
Starting out the second half the Warriors were unable to put a point on the board for almost two and a half minutes while the Hawks decreased the gap by three points (36-27). Two layups and a free-throw by Larsen gave Stan State back their momentum.
In the fourth quarter the Warriors were unstoppable, maintaining a minimum lead of 15 points for the entire quarter, and eventually putting the Hawks into a 24-point deficit (73-49). Stan State was unable to score in the last two and half minutes of the game but their considerable lead secured them the win.
As a team Stan State shot 41.3 percent from the field, and 95 percent from the free-throw line missing only one free-throw the entire game (19-for-20).
Hernandez led the Hawks with 21 points, going 8-for-16 from the field and making five three-pointers. Onjalise Carley-Hilliard scored 12 points and had eight rebounds while Chariaha Scott grabbed nine rebounds. The Hawks shot 29.2 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from the three-point arc, and 56.3 percent from the free-throw line.
Stan State will play at home again this Saturday night, hosting the Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
