TURLOCK – In a heated battle between CCAA foes, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team challenged Cal State L.A. into overtime, taking home the victory 63-60 on Saturday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
With another conference victory under their belt, the Warriors are now 5-3 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Golden Eagles are 3-7 and 2-2 in the CCAA.
Zahria Hendrix led Stan State's offense with 18 points, a new personal best.
Lizzy Alexander scored 11 points and Britney Livingston had 10 points for the Warriors.
Erika Larsen led Stan State's rebounding efforts with eight grabs at the hoop, and Hendrix followed with five rebounds.
Hendrix and Alexander each had three assists, Hendrix and Larsen had three blocks apiece, and Hendrix led with four steals.
The Warriors played tough defense, shutting down CSULA's leading scorer, Rikki Fabricius. They also tallied nine blocked shots to the Golden Eagles' six blocks, and ten steals to Cal State L.A.'s seven steals.
In the first quarter, the Warriors struggled to defend against the Golden Eagles shooting efficiency, as CSULA shot 52.9 percent from the field. Cal State L.A. went on a 6-point run to take a 13-6 lead, but Livingston banked a free throw and a buzzer-beating three-pointer to close the point gap (15-19), all within the last minute of the quarter.
Both teams decreased their shooting percentage in the second quarter, and the Golden Eagles out-rebounded Stan State 20-10. The Warriors worked their way back, tying the game at 23, but were only able to score a single point in the last four and a half minutes of the period.
Stan State came out strong after half time, outscoring the Golden Eagles 17-9 in the third quarter. The Warriors went on a 6-point run to start the half, and added another consecutive six points near the end of the quarter to tie up the game (41-41).
In the fourth quarter, the teams were neck and neck for the entirety of the period. The scoreboard saw three ties and four lead changes before the clock ran out, forcing the game into overtime.
Stan State came out with determination in the final period, banking a layup and a three-pointer right off the bat. Two perfect free-throw shots by Hendrix, five seconds before the final buzzer secured the Warriors the lead and the win.
As a team the Warriors shot 37.7 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from the three-point arc, and 68.8 percent from the free-throw line.
Madison Adams led Cal State L.A. with 17 points. Rebecca DiRegolo had 14 points and Mackenzie Barnes scored 11 points. Fabricius led with 16 rebounds and DeRegolo followed with 13 rebounds. The Golden Eagles out-rebounded Stan State 58-29. Fabricius also led with five assists and Barnes had five steals. As a team CSULA shot 29.3 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from the three-point arch, and 55.6 percent from the free-throw line.
Next week Stan State will be on the road, traveling to Humboldt State on Thursday and Sonoma State on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 both nights.
