Stan State leaves Humboldt with a loss

ARCATA - After making the long trip to Arcata, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team is heading home with a loss after being defeated by Humboldt State 59-77 on Thursday night at the Lumberjack Arena. 

The Warriors are now 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA. The Lumberjacks have improved their record to 5-5 and 4-1 in conference play. 

Kyanna Davis had a great night offensively, leading the Warriors with 19 points and going 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Lizzy Alexander followed with 11 points and Zahria Hendrix scored eight points. 

It was a slow rebounding night for the Warriors, with Davis and Erika Larsen leading with four rebounds each. Hendrix led with three assists. 

Stan State had a solid night from the free throw line, going 22-for-25 as a whole and shooting 88 percent. The Warriors shot 34.8 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from the three-point line. 

Stan State fell behind quickly into the first quarter, giving up a nine-point lead (0-9) unable to put a point on the board. Three three-pointers by Alexander and one from Hendrix put the Warriors within two points of HSU at the end of the period (14-16). Efficient shooting by the Lumberjacks put Stan State in a 12-point deficit entering into half time (27-39).

The Warriors reduced the point gap in the third quarter with a series of layups (42-46), but the Jacks were able to reclaim a significant lead before heading into the final quarter (49-58). Ten consecutive points by Humboldt State and four missed shots and two turnovers by the Warriors gave HSU a 17-point lead on Stan State, and ultimately the game. 

Tyla Turner led the Jumberjacks offense with 19 points and Isamar Conde scored 14 points. Tyla Turner also led with nine rebounds and three more Lumberjacks had three or more rebounds. Tyla Turner along with Tyra Turner had five assists each, and Tyra Turner led with five steals. As a team Humboldt State shot 46.9 percent from the field, 45.8 percent from the three-point arc, and 80 percent from the free-throw line. 

After heading back south, the Warriors will play at Sonoma State on Saturday night beginning at 5:30 p.m.
