Warriors lose another on the road, fall to Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK – Still looking for their first conference road win, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team was set back by an aggressive Sonoma State offense, losing the battle 57-69 at the Wolves' Den on Saturday night.

Struggling to take home a win away from home the Warriors are now 5-5 and 2-4 in the CCAA. With their first conference win, the Seawolves have advanced to 3-4 and 1-3 in league.

Kyanna Davis and Caprina Pipion shared the lead for Stan State, scoring 11 points each. Four more Warriors had six or more points; Brittney Livingston scored nine points, Erika Larsen and Lizzy Alexander each scored seven, and Zahria Hendrix scored six points.

Larsen led with seven rebounds and both Alexander and Hendrix picked up six rebounds. Davis had an aggressive night on defense with five steals for Stan State.

An inconsistent night at the hoop, the Warriors shot 28.8 percent from the field, 9.5 percent from the three-point arc, and 70.8 percent from the free-throw line.

Stan State held their own at the beginning of the game, staying neck in neck with SSU through the first quarter. The Warriors remained within two points of Sonoma State up until the last minute of the period when two Seawolf free-throws gave SSU a 10-14 lead.

Sonoma State took off in the second quarter, banking seven shots from the field while the Warriors only made three field-goals (22-31). Stan State fell into a 12-point deficit at the end of the third quarter when the Warriors struggled to make their shots (34-46). Stan State shot 53.5 percent (15-for-28) in the final quarter as they tried to make a comeback, but the Seawolves efficient offense kept the Warriors from stealing their way back into the lead.

Ugochi Anudokem led the Seawolves with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks. Madison Burroughs had seven assists for Sonoma State and Sam Erisman had four assists. As a team the Seawolves shot 50 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the three-point arc, and 82.1 percent from the free-throw line.

The Warriors will be on the road again next week, challenging The University of Nevada, Reno on Tuesday at Nevada. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
