Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Faniel shines once again, on a Tuesday, as Warriors beat Sonoma State

TURLOCK — It's a Tuesday night game, so of course it's Vida Faniel time.

For the second consecutive Tuesday night, Faniel scored in the 20s as the junior forward netted a new career-high with 23 points in leading the Stan State men's basketball team over Sonoma State, 75-67. The Warriors snapped their two-game CCAA losing streak to even their record to 2-2 in league play and 5-2 overall.

Stanislaus State also snapped a three-game losing streak to Sonoma State (3-3, 1-1 CCAA).

Faniel, who had 22 points a week ago on a Tuesday against Fresno Pacific, was 8 of 14 from the floor with two three-pointers. He was once again 100 percent from the foul line, nailing all five tries. Last Tuesday in Fresno, he made 10 of 10 free throws en route to his 22. He has now made 19 consecutive three throws.

Faniel's supporting cast on this Tuesday night included Ty Davis and Caleb Baskett each with 13 points. Jaelen Ragsdale turned in some solid time off the bench with eight points and three rebounds in 17 minutes. Davis also had six rebounds and four assists.

The close game had 11 ties and 15 lead changes with no one leading by more than 10 points. Sonoma State had a brief 10-point lead early in the second half when the Seawolves came out on a 12-2 run, including the first nine points. But Stan State came back with an 11-2 run to pull within one.

After a see-saw battle, the Warriors eventually used a 6-0 run that included four free throws and a Faniel short jumper for a five-point lead. SSU, however, would tie it once again on a 7-0 run capped by a Jordan Hickman three-pointer at 3:07.

The Warriors then converted all of their free throw attempts down the stretch to pull away for the win — with Davis slamming home a dunk with 7.9 seconds left for the exclamation point.

Hickman finished with 24 points to lead Sonoma State with Armani Nicolis hitting four three-pointers and finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Stanislaus won the rebounding game with a 33-30 margin but out-scored SSU 40-18 in the paint with layups and short jumpers in the post. The Warriors also had 23 points off 18 Sonoma turnovers. Faniel also led the team with eight rebounds.

Cal State L.A. (6-1, 2-0 CCAA) is the Warriors' next opponent as the Golden Eagles visit Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena Saturday night, tip-off is at about 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
