Stan State held Cal State L.A. offense down for 16-point victory

TURLOCK — Against one of the top offenses in the CCAA early in the season, the Warriors held tough on defense as they defeated Cal State L.A., 68-52, at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena Saturday night.

Kyle Gouveia recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead Stanislaus State. The Warriors have now won two straight conference games to improve to 3-2 in league play and 6-2 overall. Cal State L.A., which entered the week with a five-game losing streak, lost both games on this road trip to fall to 6-3 and 2-2 CCAA.

Before this trip, the Golden Eagles averaged 89.5 points in their first two CCAA games and had scored 376 points in their last four contests. L.A. lost at San Francisco State Friday night, 87-78, and was held to just 30.5 percent shooting against Stanislaus Saturday night on the back-to-back. The 52-point total is L.A.'s lowest of the season.

The better-rested Stan State team out-shot Cal State L.A., 48.4 percent to 24.1 in the second half to pull away. A 13-2 run turned a two-point game into a 13-point, 58-45, Stan State lead that was capped by a jumper by Ty Davis.

Davis finished with a team-high 15 points and Andy Cleaves scored 13 points with seven rebounds. Kaelen Mitchell made three three-pointers off the bench for his nine points. Caleb Baskett was all over the court to finish with six assists, two blocked shots and three steals.

Jalyn Pennie led Cal State L.A. with 19 points — 14 of them came in the first half as he accounted for more than half of the team's points. The score at halftime was 27-27.

Stanislaus once again capitalized on opponents' turnovers, netting 29 points off 19 LA turnovers (the Golden Eagles scored nine points off turnovers).

Next weekend the Warriors will make the trek north through the Redwoods to take on Humboldt State on Thursday before facing Sonoma State in Rohnert Park on Saturday.
