ARCATA — Make that three in a row for Stan State.
Andy Cleaves and
Vida Faniel each scored 16 points as Stanislaus State held on for a tight 67-62 win Thursday night at Humboldt State inside Lumberjack Arena.
The Warriors, winners of three straight California Collegiate Athletic Association games, improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in league play before Saturday's game at Sonoma State.
Stan State improved to 7-2 for the first time since the 2011-12 season. With a win Saturday, this Warrior team would become the first to start 8-2 during the CCAA era.
Humboldt State fell to 3-7, 0-5 CCAA. The Lumberjacks were led by Kameron Curl with 16 points, with 10 of them from the foul line.
Stanislaus State, which lost its first 12 visits to Arcata during the CCAA play, has now won two straight beyond the Redwood Curtain. Prior to Thursday, the Lumberjacks were 118-32 in home games since the facility opened in 2008.
The Warriors came out of the halftime break on fire with a 12-2 run to build a 10-point, 43-33 lead before the first media timeout.
Caleb Baskett started with a three-point play and Faniel nailed two consecutive three-pointers before another Baskett trey to spark the run.
Stan State maintained the lead the rest of the way, but Humboldt State tried to stage a comeback. After a
Mat Bradshaw three-pointer that gave the Warriors a 61-54 lead with 3:07 to play, the Jacks used a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to two.
Ty Davis and Cleaves would convert 4 of 6 free throws in the final minute and a Cleaves slam at 0:42 kept the Warriors in front for the win.
The Warriors out-rebounded HSU, 47-38, with
Kyle Gouveia leading the game with 12 boards. He also had nine points.
Caleb Baskett scored eight rebounds with five assists
Stanislaus State had an off-night at the free throw line, hitting just 16 of 28. Faniel snapped his consecutive free throws streak at 21.
