Alexander leads Warriors to come-from-behind win over CSUSM

TURLOCK — Lizzy Alexander had a nice all-around game — and her stat-line proved that too.

Alexander led all scorers with a career-high 21 points to lead the home team Stanislaus State Warriors to an exciting 62-57 overtime victory over Cal State San Marcos Friday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Warriors snapped a four-game skid and improved to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Alexander also had a team-best nine rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals. The sophomore forward also converted on all eight of her free throws.

Kyanna Davis chipped in nine points, Erika Larsen scored eight points with five blocked shots and Angelica Baylon had seven points with five assists to pace Stan State.

Cal State San Marcos led for all but nine seconds of the game in regulation before dropping its fourth straight game to fall to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in CCAA. Lupe Cruz scored 10 with 14 rebounds to lead the Cougars.

CSUSM led by as many as 17 points near the end of the first half and had the advantage from the tip until Alexander's layup with five seconds left in regulation that tied the game at 53-53. She would convert the traditional three-point play for the Warriors' first lead.

Stephanie Custodio, who had the chance to give the Cougars the lead, made one of two free throws with 2.6 seconds left to send the game into overtime with the score at 54-54.

The extra period belonged to Alexander as she scored six of the team's eight points with four free throws to seal the deal. Cal State San Marcos was just 1 of 5 shooting in the extra period.

Stan State survived a dismal first half when the Warriors shot just 22.2 percent. CSUSM shot 45.5 percent but only led by 12, 38-26, at the break.

The Cougars committed a total of 31 turnovers with Stan State scored 19 points off turnovers.
