TURLOCK — UC San Diego remains undefeated in conference play as the visiting Tritons defeated the Stanislaus State Warriors, 79-52, in women's basketball Sunday afternoon to end the 2017 calendar year.
Joleen Yang led UCSD with 20 points — 18 of those came on three-pointers — as the Tritons improved to 7-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UCSD is 11-2 overall. Mikayla Williams and Marcella Hughes each scored 15 points to chip in.
Stanislaus State split its NYE weekend games and is now 6-8 overall and 3-5 in CCAA.
Caitlin Keding led Stan State with 11 points while
Zahria Hendrix and
Lizzy Alexander each added 10. Keding also tallied three blocked shots and two steals. Nine of her points came on three-point attempts. Alexander also had two blocks.
UC San Diego used runs of 12 points and 13 points in the first half to sprint out to a 27-8 lead early in the second quarter. The Tritons led by as many as 23 points in the first half, at 38-15, on one of those Yang treys with 2:02 left to play in the second period.
Stan State made a push in the second half and got as close as 12 points using a 7-0 spurt with Keding scoring five and Hendrix chipped in two in the rally. However, that's as close as the Warriors could get with UCSD using another 15-4 run to pull ahead.
UCSD shot 50 percent from the field for the game and made 11 three-pointers. They also won the turnover margin game with 22-13 and used it to score 23 points off miscues.
The Warriors are on the road to start 2018 with trips to Monterey Bay and Hayward before hosting Sonoma State on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 4 p.m.
