UC San Diego upends Stanislaus State on New Year's Eve

TURLOCK — Despite a better defensive effort, the Stanislaus State men's basketball team fell in the shooting hands of UC San Diego as the Tritons took a 70-58 decision late Sunday afternoon at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

UC San Diego made 12 three-pointers and force 22 turnovers to beat the Warriors to improve to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in CCAA play. Stan State has lost three straight games and is now 9-5 overall and 5-4 in CCAA play.

For the first time in three games, the Warriors held an opponent under 50 percent shooting as UCSD shot 49.1 percent and scored well under 90 points. But the Warriors weren't able to find the shooting touch outside, hitting on just 1 of 11 from the arch. They did shoot 52.2 percent for the night, but UCSD was 12 of 33 from distance as the difference in the game.

The Tritons were led by Christian Oshita's 20 points and 7 rebounds. Scott Everman had 19 points with five steals. Oshita and Everman made four and five three-pointers, respectively.  UCSD had 19 assists on its 26 made field goals.

Andy Cleaves had 19 points for Stan State but was held to just seven points in the second half. Ty Davis scored 12 with three assists and Xavier Francois pulled 10 rebounds.

A tight game in the first half turned against the Warriors in the second with the Tritons building a 20-point lead on a Michael Shoemaker three-pointer at 15:27. Stanislaus made a comeback with a 16-4 run that cut the deficit down to eight on a Vida Faniel layup with 4:55 left to play.

Stan State, however, couldn't get any closer. In fact, the Warriors were held without a field goal in the final three minutes of the game with just three free throws to show for the rest of the way.

The Warriors will hit the road for two short trips to start 2018 with games at Monterey Bay and Hayward. Stan State is 6-1 in games away from Turlock this season.
