SEASIDE — The Warriors rebounded in a huge way as they continue to win on the road as Stan State defeated Cal State Monterey Bay, 83-57, Thursday night inside The Kelp Bed.
Kaelen Mitchell appears to be back in full strength as he led the Warriors with 19 points, tying his season high.
Caleb Baskett scored 18 points and
Andy Cleaves added 11 as Stanislaus State snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 10-5 overall and 6-4 in CCAA play.
The Warriors also improved to 7-1 in games away from Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena with their fourth straight win on the road.
Stan State out-rebounded the best rebounding team in the conference by a 48-28 margin and led by as many as 34 points before allowing CSUMB to score the final eight points in the game. The 26-point victory is the Warriors' biggest in a CCAA game since Feb. 21, 2014 when they beat Cal State East Bay, 92-61.
The Warriors ran out to a 21-7 lead capped by a 12-0 run to start the game. CSUMB, though, nailed four straight three-pointers for 12 unanswered points to get back in the game.
Monterey Bay hung around in the first half by virtue of making nine three-pointers but that would change in the second half. CSUMB made just 3 of 13 three-point attempts in the second half.
A 21-3 run stretch turned Stan State lead from 16 points to 34, at 78-44 with 7:20 to play. The Warriors shot 9 of 14 and made three three-pointers during that run to pull away.
Mitchell, who's playing time had been limited due to an ankle injury, played 24 minutes and was 8 of 11 shooting with two three-pointers.
Ty Davis had a nice game with seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block-shot. Matt Bradshaw made three three-pointers for nine points and
Kyle Gouveia led all players with nine rebounds.
Cal State Monterey Bay (4-10, 3-7 CCAA) had entered the night as the top rebounding team in CCAA games. The Otters averaged 38.1 boards per conference game. Josh Kollman led CSUMB with 15 points, all in the first half on five three-pointers.
