TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State Warriors show heart and determination playing in front of the season's largest homecoming crowd Thursday night inside Fitzpatrick Arena, but Chico State was just too good with its shooting en route to a 95-67 decision.
Jalen McFerren led Chico State with 26 points and 11 rebounds as the Wildcats improved to 19-6 overall and 12-5 in CCAA play, snapping a three-game losing streak. The Warriors, unfortunately, are going the opposite direction with a six-game skid and fell to 6-18, 3-14.
Chico State led from the jump with a McFerren trey to open the game. That was a sign of things to come as the Wildcats finished the night 17 of 33 from distance, hitting on 51.5 percent of their three-point tries. McFerren made eight of those shots himself (on nine attempts). Overall, Chico shot 53.8 from the floor.
The Wildcats quickly got out to a 13-point lead with more three-pointers, but the Warriors cut that deficit down to five on a 10-2 run capped by a
Nate Henry layup.
But that would be the closest Stan State would get. Chico State had a lead as large as 37 points late in the game. They hit the 30-point margin at 10:41 in the second half on another three-pointer by McFerren.
Freshman
Jaelen Ragsdale scored 16 points with three assists to lead the Warriors while seniors
Vondel Faniel and
Joey Bennett chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively.
As a team, Stanislaus shot 40.3 percent from the field but was just 5 of 18 from the arch.
The same two teams will face each other again in a couple days, on Saturday, in Chico.
